The history of Manitoba and Western Canada is inextricably linked with the Hudson’s Bay Company, the fur trade and the early explorers and Voyageurs who ran the trade. Start your tour at the Manitoba Museum’s Hudson’s Bay Collection, a collection that contains more than 10,000 artefacts and spans three centuries of the Company’s – and Canada’s – colourful history. Then, grab your moccasins and head to the historic Red River, where you will paddle your canoe down river like the Voyageurs to Fort Gibraltar, a full-scale trading post where costumed interpreters recreate and share with you their lives in the fur trade in 1815. Tour the fort and participate in Voyageur games, bake bannock by the campfire and learn about the fort’s economic system with a game that will have you bartering and haggling for the goods you’ll need to survive on the wild, unpredictable prairies!
Allow yourself to be carried away with the infectious spirit and joie de vivre of the French-Canadian Voyageurs as you explore first-hand Canada’s fascinating past.
